Design Assistant (Trainee)

We are looking for enthusiastic emerging designers, set/prop makers, puppet makers to assist on the creation of our Christmas production. 

This is an exciting opportunity to get hands-on experience in a range of design elements. The role will suit recent graduates / early career creatives interested in working in a fast-paced environment in which they can take on responsibility, build up their CVs and work with professional designers.

If you are passionate about theatre and want to develop your skills and gain more industry experience, this could be the opportunity for you.

As part of the production team, Design Assistants will work closely with the design team to create and source set, props and puppets and will include researching, sourcing, building and painting.

Skills and Qualifications

You will have some training and/or experience in theatrical design and be interested in developing your skills across a range of design responsibilities.

Design Assistant Responsibilities

Collaborate with the design team to realise their vision

Keep up to date with production information (including production scripts, timetables, meeting minutes, design sketches, etc.)

Maintain strong lines of communication by attending production meetings and holding separate meetings/ conversations with the Production Designer, as necessary

Research for design inspiration and/or to help source materials and props

Making, building and sourcing props and set pieces

Assisting communication between directors, designers and acting companies about design needs

Undertaking other duties in regard to the realisation of the production design, as required


Additional skills and qualities

  • Attention to detail: All work must be of the highest professional standard
  • Ability to work under pressure: Theatre work can be fast-paced and demanding, requiring assistants to work efficiently and effectively under pressure.
  • Good communication skills: Design assistants need to communicate clearly across all role
  • Teamwork: Design work is a collaborative effort, requiring assistants to work well with others.
  • Knowledge of theatre and performance: A basic understanding of theatre terminology, performance practices, and design is helpful.

Other Information 

We are a small team collaborating to make a magical performance experience for our audiences. This sometimes means that all must participate in duties outside specific role descriptions in order to facilitate a smooth and professional production. You will be expected to remain flexible and contribute to the requirements of the production whenever possible, even when tasks are not specifically listed in their responsibilities. 

This role includes working with young people so you must have or be willing to have an enhanced DBS and committed to ensuring the wellbeing and safety of children and young people.
