Production Assistant - Wardrobe (Trainee)

Engagement period between 25th November – 29th December

We are looking for enthusiastic emerging creative with a passion for costume to assist the stage management team during the performance period of our Christmas show.

You will support wardrobe for the duration of the performance period following a handover from the Costume Designer. During the run you will be supported by the DSM and Production Manager.

This is an exciting opportunity to get hands-on experience working with costume for a professional show. The role will suit recent graduates / early career creatives interested in working in a fast-paced environment in which they can take on responsibility, build up their CVs and work with a professional team.

Skills and Qualifications

You will have some training and/or experience in costume and be interested in developing your skills across a range of costume responsibilities.

Key Responsibilities

  • Costume care:  This includes cleaning, ironing, steaming, and mending costumes. 
  • Dressing performers:  Assisting actors with dressing and costume changes before and during performances. 
  • Costume storage and organisation:  Packing, unpacking, and storing costumes and accessories, ensuring they are readily available when needed. 
  • Record keeping:  Maintaining accurate records of costumes, accessories, and their condition. 
  • Assisting with alterations:  Making simple alterations and repairs to costumes as needed. 
  • Working with performers:  Being attentive and helpful to actors, ensuring they feel comfortable and supported. 

Additional skills and qualities

  • Attention to detail: Wardrobe assistants need to be meticulous in their work, ensuring that costumes are clean, well-maintained, and in the correct condition.
  • Ability to work under pressure: Theatre work can be fast-paced and demanding, requiring assistants to work efficiently and effectively under pressure.
  • Good communication skills: Wardrobe assistants need to communicate clearly with both the senior staff and the performers.
  • Teamwork: Wardrobe work is often a collaborative effort, requiring assistants to work well with others.
  • Knowledge of theatre and performance: A basic understanding of theatre terminology, performance practices, and costume design is helpful.

  • Paid placement time for approx. 10 days across the engagement period which can be delivered with some flexibility

Other Information 

We are a small team collaborating to make a magical performance experience for our audiences. This sometimes means that all must participate in duties outside specific role descriptions in order to facilitate a smooth and professional production. You will be expected to remain flexible and contribute to the requirements of the production whenever possible, even when tasks are not specifically listed in their responsibilities. 

This role includes working with young people so you must have or be willing to have an enhanced DBS and committed to ensuring the wellbeing and safety of children and young people.
